So on the weekend, chicken wings were on the menu – but where from?

Having my own little flock of cluckers, it's important to me to know my chicken comes from a happy, healthy place. My views on this issue have been expressed before.

Last Sunday, I went to a local farmers market. And there was the tiny little nondescript stall – Brisbane Certified Organics (BCO). BCO sell pork, lamb, chicken and beef. They believe in sustainable and humane farming practices.

As I'm yet to try their other products, this post will be limited to their chicken. But from what I've tried so far, it is some top notch produce.

They sell Bendele Farm chicken, who before visiting BCO, I'd never heard of before.

Much to my delight, Bendele actually has its own processing facilities – meaning live chickens never go through the stress and brutality of transport. This is quite unusual, as there is a huge amount of legislation around meat processing in Australia, so on farm slaughter for public consumption is not an easy thing to achieve. The chickens are paddock raised, humanely processed and then packed for sale – all the while using sustainable and organic practices. I bought three kilos of wings for $30. They were in excellent condition (no bruising or breakages) and they cooked beautifully. I cooked them with Siracha and honey. They were sweet, spicy and rich.

I'm looking foward to trying out more of this range!
